The Major Points Page

What we Stock

The Happy Brewer stocks a full range of Brewing Grains It would be a complete waste of time for us as a retailer to list every conceivable item we sell when the majority of people reading this page would have no concept of what they were.

Equally it would be pointless for us to list prices of these products as they are constantly changing and as you will see elsewhere on this site we have a price promise on the products you buy.

However we are going to use as examples of what we stock some extracts from current and past newsletters. These we feel will give you an example and a feel for our enthusiasm for the trade we have been in for over 20 years, selling nothing other than homebrew.

New from Brewferm

For brewing immediately and enjoying throughout the rest of autumn through to winter then into next spring we have some new beers from Belgium.

We featured the Belgium Brewferm range in a previous edition of Grapevine. We now have a new addition the Gallia Ale 12lt, described as a 'light amber, thirst quenching beer with a noble bitterness' and those of our customers who have already tried this kit say it’s a sure fire winner!

Others in this range include Wheat beer 15lt. 'An almost white coloured beer, slightly cloudy, pleasant taste, aromic nose....a real thirst quencher' and the Grand Cru 9lt 'A golden coloured and mouthful beer with a pleasant spicy aroma and a malty taste with fruit notes'.

Also available from stock are the Abbey, which produces 9 litres of a ‘dark Dubbel Abbey beer’. The Diabolo, also produces 9 litres of what is described tantalisingly as ‘Devilish, blond and aromatic’. Of the two fruit beers the favourite is the Kriek which produces 12 litres of an ‘aromatic black cherry beer’. There are also another seven beers in this range for you to choose from and impress your friends with.

We would recommend that these beers are brewed at least 6-8 weeks before they are sampled, or even longer if you can bear to leave them.

To compliment these Belgium beers we now stock 500ml and 750ml swing top bottles which are ideally suited to bottles these exquisite beers.

Wine Presses

The last few years have been excellent for fruit and in particular apples. Many of you already have Fruit Presses and have been producing excellent Cider for many years.

Nearly all beermakers who have access to large quantities of apples every year would benefit from a Fruit Press. Cider is just 100% apple juice fermented like beer and served in the same way.

It is not unusual for some cider makers to produce up to 100 gallons of cider a year, and the cost is minimal after the initial purchase of equipment.

The selection of the right press is very important and we sell various sizes, to fit most needs. You will need in addition to the press a way of pulping the fruit. Entry level pulping could be just a Pulpmaster and bucket, costing around £20, larger quantities would need a crusher.

We have two excellent books on Cidermaking, "Real Cidermaking on a Small Scale" by Michael Pooley & John Lomax and "Making Cider" by Jo Deal.

As a guide to how much cider you can be produced a smallish bush tree will produce approximately 100lbs of apples and a large standard tree, the sort you can walk under, will produce 500lbs. On average you will need 20 to 25 lbs of apples to produce one gallon of cider.

The right selection of a press is very important, too small a press makes it hard work and a larger press could prove to be uneconomical, therefore see our comments below, or seek our advice on the ideal press for you.

2 kg Cross Beam - Suitable for production of small quantities of juice

5.3kg Cross beam - Excellent entry level press

6 Litre Spindle Press - Excellent entry level press for production of 5 gallon lots

9 Litre Spindle Press - Suitable for production of up to 10 gallons.

12 Litre Cross Beam Press - Excellent press for production of 20 gallon lots

Selection Wine Kits

South African Pinotage, described as delicate and balanced like a Pinot, with the hardiness and robust colour of Cinsault, this a variety too long neglected in popular wine circles.

Selection International Pinotage is a deep, intense ruby colour with purple highlights. Complex and intense, its layered aromas of ripe raspberry, spices, red cherry and fruitcake give way to a rich complexity of flavours, including raspberry, vanilla, plum, coffee and even a hint of banana!

Smooth on the palate due to firm (but friendly) tannins, it allows for easy drinking but also promises wonderful aging potential.

Our successful promotion of Selection wine kits has given many of our customers the opportunity to try these superb kits…”
